Fairview Campus Highlights
Wine Appreciation, Cajun Cooking, Quilt Making and a concealed weapons training course are among the many Adult Training and Development classes available during the fall semester at NWTC in Fairview.
Wine Appreciation is a 12-hour class featuring local, Oklahoma wines. Students will experience and taste a variety of wines, understanding both red and white wines as well as food pairing. A full-course meal will be served during the class’s final session.
Two other culinary classes are also offered- Cajun Cooking with Marla and German Ethnic Cooking which gives students the opportunity to prepare famous German dishes including Zwieback, mooss, borscht, New Year’s cookies, and varanika. Participants in each class are encouraged to bring their appetites as they’ll be able to enjoy the dishes they prepare each session.
The concealed weapons training course involves all aspects of firearm safety and handgun shooting as well as information on the Oklahoma Self Defense Act and provisions of Oklahoma law relating to self defense.
Other fall AT&D courses scheduled include Landscape Maintenance and Design, Home Food Gardens, AutoCAD, Upholstery, Introduction to Computers, and Fire Fighter 1.
Landscape Maintenance and Design introduces participants to the various aspects of lawn maintenance including insect control, pruning of trees and shrubs, proper planting procedures, and layout and design.
Home Food Gardens provides the latest research-based information on the home food garden. Topics covered include the value of a home food garden, site and selection, varieties, soil preparation, watering, weed control, mulches, and disease and insect control.
AutoCAD or Computer Aided Drafting and Design covers basic drawing, editing, dimensioning, and plot commands using AutoCAD 2007 LT software. Students will learn how to set up and complete a detailed drawing, as well as complete a work-related drafting and design project of their choice.
In Introduction to Upholstery, students gain hands-on experience reupholstering, removing old covers, rebuilding frames, cutting and making cording, retying springs, replacing padding, and making patterns and much more. In addition, students will make and stuff cushions and learn how to measure furniture for fabric.
The Intro to Computers course offered at NWTC introduces participants to the world of personal computers. They will discuss its uses, learn key terms, and do hands-on work. No prior experience is required as teaching will start from the very beginning of computer usage, focusing on making students comfortable with computing. Primary focus will be on Windows XP.
Fire Fighter 1 is an intensive course that covers basic knowledge and skills needed to function as a firefighter. The curriculum is based on IFSTA’s Essentials of Fire Fighting. This is a standard for fire fighter professional qualifications. After completion, participants who have completed CPR training and Hazmat Awareness are eligible for Fire Testing.
Alva Campus Highlights
Financial Peace University highlights a lineup of more than a dozen Adult Training and Development classes offered this fall at Northwest Technology Center in Alva.
Taught by Charlotte Hadwiger, Financial Peace is a 13-week program that encourages positive financial behavior with accountability and support. The course teaches financial responsibility by helping participants eliminate debt, training them to spend every dollar on paper, and empowering those facing financial hardships by establishing a plan to take control of their finances. The course is recommended for both couples and singles.
A number of classes in areas ranging from cooking and photography to landscaping and interior design are also available during the fall semester.
German Cooking- Café Bahnhof Style is a class in which participants are sure to experience German cooking at its finest. Taught by Dieter Dorner at the Café Bahnhof in Waynoka, students will learn to prepare the authentic German dishes passed down through generations that have made Café Bahnhof famous. Participants are encouraged to bring their appetites as they’ll enjoy eating each session’s prepared dishes.
For those looking to improve and expand their communications skills, Conversational Spanish and Signing Exact English courses are available. Conversational Spanish is designed to help students develop basic conversational skills in Spanish, while the Sign Language course introduces basic signs, phrases, and word combinations and teaches the skills needed to communicate with the hearing impaired.
For individuals looking to use their hands for building or remodeling rather than talking, Ceramic Tiling, Landscaping, and Fuel Injection Theory are available.
The Fuel Injection Theory course provides instruction concerning all areas of the various EFI systems used in today’s high-tech vehicles. Throughout the class, students receive both classroom instruction and live practice.
In his landscaping course, Tom Crenshaw of Crenshaw’s Nursery promises to help homeowners discover what grows well in northwest Oklahoma and what doesn’t. Those hoping to develop a green thumb will learn how, when and where to plant trees, shrubs and grasses as well as tips on how to care for existing plants and trees.
Ceramic Tiling teaches participants how to layout, cut, and set tile so they might save costs on their next home improvement project. The course includes hands-on instruction in all areas of the tiling process including the adhesives, procedures, and tools needed for floor, wall, and bath tile projects.
After completing Ceramic Tiling or Landscaping, many people are interested in moving to the next step of home renovation- interior decorating. In her Designing on a Dime course, Marsha Hendrix gives participants on a budget tips and tricks to transform their houses using ordinary household items and garage sale bargains.
