HOSA Students Busy With Several Activities
This school year has been filled with activities for NWTC’s Fairview HOSA chapter. They have been introduced to health careers by the Fairview Regional Medical Center (FRMC) hosting them for a career panel and HIPAA training with Mackey Marten.
A blood drive was held on campus in October with a total of 37 donations being made. HOSA will host another drive February 12, 2010.

Pre-nursing students assisted the health department during the community flu clinic.
On October 23, students were able to attend a job shadow day in Enid. Carissa Cowen with NwOAHEC coordinated the day with clinical settings at Integiris Bass Hospital & Pavillion, Serenity Springs, C.L.Meyers Spa, & Finer Physiques.

Desiree Springer, Mandi Hibbitt, Brittany People, Andrea Scraper, and Kourtney Mondoux participated in job shadowing activities at C. L. Meyers in Enid.
The chapter also celebrated National HOSA week November 1-7. The week kicked off with the chapter sharing with the campus about their National Service Project, Autism. Members provided statistics and other information regarding the behavioral disorder. Tuesday the members shared a game about different healthcare careers with students on break. A penny war was started Wednesday to raise funds for Autism Speaks as well as students and staff wore their shirts backwards to “turn Autism around”. Proper portions sizes and the food pyramid was introduced to the fellow students of NWT by using foods shaped like items to identify portion per serving of foods. Students and staff wore black to “obliterate Autism”. The closing of the week ended on a somber note with the showing of Autism Speaks awareness video. This video interviewed families dealing with this disorder and the effects they undergo on a daily basis.
The chapter is planning on participating at the Major County Health Fair November 12 to share handwashing techniques. HOSA students will be volunteering at the FRMC 5K run on November 14th as well.
