Northwest Technology Center has been serving high school and adult students from Major and Woods counties for over 30 years. Northwest Tech is one of 29 technology centers in Oklahoma which are accredited by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.

The Oklahoma Northwest Area Vocational-Technical School was formed in 1969 with the first classes for both the Alva and Fairview campuses being offered during the 1972-1973 school year. Austin Barragree served as superintendent from 1970 until 1985 when the current superintendent, Freelin Roberts, was hired.

In recent years, the name has evolved from the Northwest Area Vocational-Technical School to the Northwest Technology Center. Along with the name change of the school has been the continuous update and change of program offerings.

Statistics

Northwest Technology Center was ranked on the Journal Record’s list of the “ Largest Technology Center’s” in Oklahoma. NWTC ranked 15th on the list. “We are the highest ranked small school” said Freelin Roberts, NWTC’s Superintendent. “Our total enrollment for 2006-2007 which includes day programs, business and industry training and evening enrollment was over 12,000. This is an increase of almost 1,000 enrollments over 2005-2006 numbers.”

Other statistics that were included on the list were number of staff and faculty, annual budget, and positive placement. Positive placement is an indication of students who are trained by the school’s daytime career programs and placed into a related job or career field. NWTC’s positive placement is 89%. “NWTC has one of the smallest valuations (or tax bases) in comparison to other technology centers in Oklahoma,” stated Jane Bowen, NWTC’s Assistant Superintendent on the Fairview campus. “As a small technology center, this means that we are making our budget stretch to meet the needs of our partner communities.”

Also, according the to recent Secondary Enrollment Service Report published by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, Northwest Technology Center serves 28.85% of the high school juniors and seniors in its seven school district service area. This percentage is the second highest as compared to the other 29 Oklahoma technology centers. The statewide technology center service average for high school juniors and seniors is 18%.
